Syrah 2013 – $32

With this we aimed for a wine with real interest and complexity in the aroma. This started in the vineyard by controlling the yields and dropping any fruit that was behind in the ripening cycle. We also leaf plucked early and often to expose the fruit and allow the ripening process to begin as early as possible.
In the winery, by adding 20% of the fruit as whole bunches to the ferment, we got got some nice carbonic maceration characters coming through and some spicy stuff from the stems. We also chucked in around 3% viognier skins and stems we had frozen from the Rushbrook viognier pressing, this gives the wine a kind of floral, musky character.
Aged for 11 months in all French, 1/3 new barrels, the oak adds some warm spice and sweetness to the palate.
In the end, this wine went to bottle unfined and unfiltered, to try and preserve the more fragile components of the aromatics.
We’re extremely proud of this wine,
It’s aromatic with floral, dark berry, and spice characters. The palate is chewy and flavoursome, with plenty of tannin to ensure decent aging potential.
