200 metres up overlooking the Bay of Islands, the Rushbrook vineyard is a cool, low vigour site. Equally blessed and cursed with a constant cooling breeze, usually from the southwest, this site is the latest ripening in the BOI. Yields are low, and flavours are intense, in a good year the fruit can be exceptional.
We have five clones of Syrah; Mass Selection, 470, 174, Grippat A, and Grippat B. One clone of Viognier, 642, on two rootstocks, 420A and 3309C, and a few rows of Chambourcin on its own roots.
This is where we get grapes for the Waingaro Syrah, and Waingaro Viognier.
Fat Pig Vineyard
The Fat Pig Vineyard is located at 177 Puketotara Road.
This is where we source our Puketotara Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Puketotara Syrah. Again it’s a relatively cool site by Northland standards, although sheltered so the late afternoons get very hot.
