200 metres up overlooking the Bay of Islands, the Rushbrook vineyard is a cool, low vigour site. Blessed and cursed with a constant cooling breeze, generally from the southwest, this site is the latest ripening in the BOI. Yields are low, and flavours are intense, in a good year the fruit can be exceptional.
We have five clones of Syrah; Mass Selection, 470, 174, Grippat A, and Grippat B. One clone of Viognier, 642, on two rootstocks, 420A and 3309C, and a few rows of Chambourcin on its own roots.
Fat Pig Vineyard
The Fat Pig Vineyard is located at 177 Puketotara Road, the site of the Fat Pig and Byrne cellar door. From 2014 harvest we’ll be taking grapes from here are making them into Byrne wines.
Here we’ve got Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Syrah. Again it’s a relatively cool site by Northland standards, although sheltered so the late afternoons get very hot.
